Ingredients
2 c. self-rising flour, plus more for rolling out
1/2 c. (2 ounces) shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
2 Tbsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
0.67 c. buttermilk

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Coat a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, combine flour, cheese, sugar, salt, and cayenne pepper, if desired; mix well. Using a fork or pastry cutter, cut shortening into flour mixture until crumbly. Add buttermilk and stir until a dough forms.

3. Sprinkle flour on a board; knead dough until smooth. Roll out dough with a rolling pin to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into 2-inch heart-shaped biscuits. Place on baking sheet.

4. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, or until light golden. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.
